Life at NUS

1) My hatred for SBS is growing faster than the rate blogs are multiplying. I will switch to SMRT. At least their buses are air-conditioned.

2) The English Department pamphlet has a list of "eminent Alumni." On top of the list is Wong Kan Seng, Minister of Home Affairs. I wonder if he actually studied literary classics like 1984.

3) Some (of not all) canteens now have a nice, huge TV that screens nothing most of the time. When the TV does screen something, it is a VCD showing people in the canteen. I think it is meant to teach university students that they need to queue up for their food and clear their trays. Best of all, they TV in the Arts Canteen is placed in such a way that no one would be facing the screen. [We are always good at being subversive.]

4) NUS seems to have scraped all the vending machines that dispense hot drinks. There are also nice new vending machines that get depleted very fast. Just that these machines sell a bottle of Ice Mountain for more than a dollar. I can get it in the Co-op for 50 cents.

5) The co-op is not getting in books on time as usual.

Out of topic, but you might want to help us poor undergrads out:

Ha, every other undergrad who walked past me yesterday was complaining about the CORS system, which was a brilliant idea to start off in the first place... Well, the older system made it to the New Paper, so we have this CORS system. Imagine what they would replace the CORS system with...

To be fair, it probably not the fault of the tech people. MAye certain things just happen when you take in too many students and perhaps do not have set aside enough funds to have more servers. I think they should not limit themselves to the Internet. Allow people the option of manual adding/ dropping, come up with phone/sms add/drop, etc. [Don't come after me if they really do implement these.]

Do I know you in person, by the way?

Haha! I never truly understood the presence of the TVs at the Art canteen. One day the fruit juice auntie/uncle is going to discard so much water during cleaning up that the wires go haywire and the TV explodes. Or something. That would be just excellent.

Alternatively, they could let me bring the TV home before that happens.

Strange. I haven't been to the canteen for a couple of months, and today I found the TV missing?!

I heard the put the TV there intermittenly... I think they believe that freshmen do not know how to order food, to clear their plates etc and need to be taught via a TV screen that no one watches for more than 2 seconds.
